What is EBOO?
EBOO — Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation — is the most advanced form of ozone therapy available. It processes blood through filtration, oxygen-ozone exposure, UVB disinfection, and infrared biostimulation before returning it to the body.
Unlike standard autohemotherapy (AHT) which treats ~250ml of blood, EBOO processes up to 4,800ml per session through continuous extracorporeal circulation — nearly 20× more blood. Developed in the 1990s by Prof. Velio Bocci and Prof. Natale Di Paolo.
In one session it simultaneously delivers filtration, oxygenation, ozonation, UVB disinfection, and infrared biostimulation — addressing oxidative stress, immune dysfunction, inflammation, poor circulation, and microbial burden at once.

Major Autohemotherapy
Major Autohemotherapy (MAH) is the cornerstone of systemic ozone therapy — a well-established medical procedure in clinical practice since the 1950s, with the strongest research evidence of all ozone delivery routes. A carefully calculated volume of the patient’s own blood (typically 100–250ml) is drawn into a sterile, ozone-resistant container, precisely mixed with medical-grade ozone gas at a controlled concentration, and then slowly reinfused intravenously.
When ozone contacts the drawn blood, it immediately reacts with plasma proteins and blood cell membranes, generating bioactive lipid oxidation products (LOPs) that act as secondary messengers throughout the body. These molecules activate the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway, modulate the immune system, improve red blood cell flexibility and oxygen delivery, and stimulate mitochondrial energy production. The visible change is immediate — blood entering the IV bag as dark venous red returns to the body bright, oxygen-rich red.
The procedure is performed in approximately 30–60 minutes with the patient comfortably reclined. Effects are cumulative — most patients notice measurable improvement after 3–5 sessions, with protocols typically running 5–20 sessions depending on the clinical indication.

Local / Minor Ozone Injection
Where Major Autohemotherapy delivers ozone systemically through the bloodstream, local and minor ozone injections deliver the therapeutic gas directly into or immediately around a specific site of pain, inflammation, or dysfunction. This targeted approach concentrates the therapeutic effect precisely where it is needed — a joint, a disc, a muscle trigger point, or superficial tissue — without systemic involvement.
Minor autohemotherapy involves withdrawing a small volume of blood (5–20ml), mixing it with ozone, and reinjecting it intramuscularly — a method documented to significantly improve musculoskeletal pain and inflammation markers in published trials including a 250-patient observational study on knee osteoarthritis.
Local ozone injection delivers ozone gas directly into a joint (intra-articular), disc (intradiscal), muscle trigger point (intramuscular), or surrounding soft tissue. Anti-inflammatory LOPs are generated at the exact site — suppressing TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 locally, stimulating fibroblast activity, promoting cartilage repair signals, and activating the antinociceptive (pain-suppressing) system.
Clinical evidence is most robust for knee osteoarthritis, lumbar disc disease, shoulder tendinopathy, and temporomandibular joint disorders. A January 2023 study found intra-articular ozone injection (once weekly for 4 weeks) significantly reduced pain in Stage II and III knee osteoarthritis with no side effects.

Rectal Insufflation
Rectal ozone insufflation is one of the oldest and most clinically utilised forms of ozone therapy — a well-tolerated, non-invasive route that delivers medical-grade ozone gas directly into the colon via a small catheter. Far from being a purely local gut treatment, rectal insufflation has both local and systemic effects: ozone is rapidly absorbed through the mucosal lining of the colon into the lymphatic system and venous capillaries, producing systemic metabolic and immunomodulatory responses comparable to those of intravenous ozone therapy.
This makes rectal insufflation a valuable route when intravenous access is difficult or not preferred, and an important standalone therapy for gut-related conditions. The gas interacts directly with the colonic mucosa — reducing pathogenic bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi without eliminating beneficial flora, reducing local inflammation, and supporting the restoration of healthy microbial diversity. Vaginal/Cervical Insufflation

Under Eye/Ear Insufflation
This dual-route therapy addresses two distinct but complementary targets: the periorbital area (under the eyes) and the ear canals. Both are delivered through precise, gentle introduction of medical-grade ozone at very low concentrations — the under-eye route working on the delicate tissue and microvascular network of the periorbital area, and the ear route working on the ear canal, sinuses, lymphatic system, and — through absorption into blood vessels in the ear — reaching the brain and nervous system.
Under Eye — Periorbital Rejuvenation
Dark circles are primarily caused by thin, translucent skin revealing underlying blood vessels, melanin deposits from oxidative damage, or sluggish microcirculation leaving deoxygenated blood visible through the periorbital skin. A PubMed case report (2022) specifically documented ozone therapy as an “alternative approach to treating dark circles” in periorbital pigmentation. Ozone delivered subcutaneously to the periorbital area improves microcirculation, reduces pigmentation, stimulates collagen production in the thinning skin, and reduces local oxidative stress — addressing the biological root of the problem.

Ear — Auricular Insufflation
Ear (auricular) insufflation introduces ozone gently into the ear canal using a specialised ear scope device. The ozone is absorbed through the blood vessels in the ear canal and — through the eustachian tube connections — reaches the sinus cavities, inner ear structures, lymphatic system, and via systemic absorption, the brain.
